Versus Sexboat is a film podcast which attempts to close a knowledge gap. Wherever there are films, there are reviews and ratings. Ratings seek to distill all the different elements of a film down to a score, a number on a page or a row of stars. In a way it is a useful exercise, an at-a-glance shorthand for what's hot and what's not. But on the other hand it is terribly reductive.
Versus Sexboat aims to redress this balance a little. We are taking films which are ranked with the exact same score as our scientifically chosen control film, Sexboat (1980), on IMDb.com and subjecting them to a more in-depth analysis, using our soon-to-be-legendary Five Characteristics of a Good Film criteria.
When we started this project, on January 15th 2012, Sexboat was rated 7.0 on IMDb. As it fluctuates up and down, so will the choices of film available to us - our ultimate dream is that one day we'll be able to do Schindler's List (current rating 8.9) - but what we hope will remain the same is our level of insight as we break down the accepted structures of modern day film criticism.
